Job Description

Overview Assistant Coach - Cross Country/Track and Field The Assistant Cross Country, Track and Field Coach will assist the Head Cross County, Track and Field Coach in all aspects of developing and maintaining a highly competitive collegiate track and field and cross country program. This position is responsible for coaching student-athletes in a specific event group (e.g., sprints, jumps, throws, distance), recruiting qualified prospective student-athletes, contributing to a positive and successful team culture that emphasizes academic achievement, athletic excellence, and personal growth. The Assistant Coach must adhere to all NCAA rules (as applicable), conference, and institutional rules and regulations. Coaching and Instruction (approximately 50 percent): Develop and implement daily training plans for assigned event group(s) in conjunction with the head coach. Provide expert technical instruction and tactical guidance to student-athletes during practices, competitions, and individual sessions. Analyze athletic performance using various tools (e.g., video analysis, timing systems) and provide constructive feedback for improvement. Monitor student-athlete progress, health, and well-being, adjusting training as needed. Foster a positive and challenging training environment that encourages maximum effort, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Attend and coach at all scheduled practices, meets, and team events, including travel. Assist with the setup and breakdown of practice and competition equipment. Recruiting (approximately 25 percent): Identify, evaluate, and recruit academically and athletically qualified prospective student-athletes for the assigned event group(s). Initiate and maintain regular communication with recruits, high school coaches, and club coaches. Plan and execute official and unofficial campus visits for prospective student-athletes. Represent the university and track and field program at recruiting events, combines, and high school meets. Maintain accurate and up-to-date recruiting records in accordance with NCAA regulations. Program Management and Administration (approximately 5 percent): Assist the head coach with administrative tasks, including but not limited to: Developing meet entries and travel itineraries. Managing equipment inventory and ordering. Budgeting and expense tracking (as assigned). Data entry and recordkeeping for team statistics and academic progress. Maintaining team social media accounts and communications. Ensure compliance with all university, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations. Assist with fundraising activities as needed. Student-Athlete Development (approximately 20 percent): Monitor and support student-athletes' academic progress and connect them with academic support resources. Promote a culture of integrity, sportsmanship, and ethical conduct. Mentor student-athletes in their personal and professional development. Assist with team building activities and community service initiatives. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Minimum of three years of successful coaching experience at the collegiate or high school level, or significant competitive experience in track & field at the collegiate or professional level in the assigned event group. Demonstrated knowledge of specific event group techniques, training methodologies, and safety protocols. Strong organizational, communication (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively with diverse populations of student-athletes, coaches, and administrators. Proficiency with basic computer applications (Microsoft Office Suite, email, etc.). Understanding of and commitment to NCAA rules and regulations. Valid driver's license and ability to travel extensively for recruiting and competitions. CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire). Preferred Qualifications Master's degree. Collegiate playing experience in track & field. Experience with video analysis software and other coaching technology. Experience with recruiting databases and CRM systems. Current USTFCCCA (or equivalent) technical certification. Other Requirements Ability to stand, walk, run, and demonstrate drills for extended periods. Ability to lift and move athletic equipment (up to 50 lbs.). Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions. Frequent travel required. Ability to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
